The business tax cuts that were enacted have caused the state budget to fall into repeated annual budget deficits since I wrote this column in 2012. Second, those same tax cuts have utterly failed to create jobs as evidenced by the fact that since this column was written there are 20,000 fewer West Virginians with jobs. Meanwhile, the nation as a whole as added four and a half million new jobs in that same period. Scoff if you like at the notion of a playwright commenting on economics, but events of the two and half years since this piece was published more than vindicate what I wrote then. Thanks for the opportunity to say "I told you so". Walmart is an easy and popular target, bu there are probably thousands of small businesses that are better of with fewer taxes when they have few dollars to trim in THEIR budgets. And the schooling is going to take a philosophical change, not so much fiscal, in order to improve - and that won't happen overnight. The state has to learn to live on less - and do it more effectively. If they can boost the economy, the budget problems will largely settle themselves.

Imagine, a playwright doing commentary! I read your excellent post on t...Hello Mr. O’Leary:
I read your excellent post on the WV Democratic Party and read the text of Belinda Biafore’s interview. I couldn’t agree with you more. The Democratic Party in our state is indeed lost.

I have heard very little talk of real economic diversification from either party. Instead we hear a parade of energy industry execs and their political sycophants droning on about the war on coal and the so called fracking miracle. Coal, as you have pointed out, is dead or dying, and fracking, as you have also pointed out, is a pitiful job creator. (One future exception related to fracking might be the fracking byproduct industry).

A strong message of economic diversification is an honest message that would serve to differentiate the Dems from the Repubs in our state. Real economic diversity would attract bright people from outside our state and help to keep educated people from leaving our state. An educated middle class is going to demand good schools, infrastructure improvements, and environmental safeguards all while helping to create more good jobs.

This of course is easier said than done which is probably why our politicians in both parties point fingers and dream of energy extraction based miracles. I notice that Ms. Biafore is from Fairmont so, I am especially disappointed that she didn’t mention the WV Technology Park located there. I worked there for 5 years and know for a fact that it and the surrounding facilities such as the FBI Bio ID center in Clarksburg and Mylan labs in Morgantown are exactly the kind of diversity that the Dems should be shouting about.
Your previous posts have pointed out that the Eastern Panhandle and the N WV areas are adding population because of their relative economic diversity. Much of this seems to be common sense, yet many of our politicians seem to be suspicious of or intimidated by these newer concerns. I think that I will put together a note for the WV Dems discussing some of these topics.

Thanks for all your time and effort. I always read your blog.

Steve Runfola
45 Park Ridge Drive
Morgantown, WV. 26508macrolhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10229869375191829096noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1656624371497588038.post-49512723121406642212015-04-07T12:15:16.302-04:002015-04-07T12:15:16.302-04:00Debbi, thanks for your comment. It was the legenda...Debbi, thanks for your comment. It was the legendary commedian, Will Rogers, who famously said, "I'm not a member of any organized political party. I'm a Democrat." But, the truth is that, in West Virginia at least, up until last November, Democrats haven't had a problem getting elected, which is why the party held decades-long majorities in the WV house and senate and have for the most part controlled the governor's office as well.

The problem from the perspective of many of us who are progressive or liberal in outlook is that, when in power, Democrats implemented policies that were repugnant and that have harmed the state -- corporate tax cuts, slavish support for the coal industry, opposition to environmental health and safety regulations, cuts to education and public services, etc. But, even in the aftermath of devastating losses in the last election, the state party has so far been resistant to any change. The day after the election Joe Manchin was quoted in the Charleston Gazette saying of the election, "This was not about the [state] Democratic Party. It was all about President Obama and the national Democrat agenda, from the president’s own agenda.”

Still, as you point out, the Democratic party is probably the only viable alternative to Republicans at least in the short term. So, we have to make a choice. Do we ignore Democratic leaders' continuing support of a deeply conservative agenda and vote for them anyway in the hope they'll eventually evolve? Or, do we withhold support in the hope that getting thrashed at the ballot box will eventually cause the party to return to its progressive roots?

Given the steadfast denial by Joe Manchin of the need to change and the failure of Belinda Biafore to acknowledge the need, it looks to me like "coming together" in support of the party as currently constituted will only reinforce them in their attitudes. So, for reasons of both policy and politics, it will probably be necessary for the party to crash and burn and for a new leadership to emerge before it makes sense to come together.
Sean O'Learyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01287734264328253814noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1656624371497588038.post-54360901773333250932015-04-07T08:32:28.575-04:002015-04-07T08:32:28.575-04:00Oh, how I wish we Democrats had a strong, cohesive...Oh, how I wish we Democrats had a strong, cohesive message. I see us going every which way. And even if we had a message, we would probably fight about how to present it.

Have you reached out to Belinda to offer support, encouragement, ideas, suggestions? I'm struck by how Republicans can disagree about issues, particularly social issues, and yet hang together on Election Day.

I don't believe an Independent or Mountain Party candidate will win in WV. We're not Vermont. If we have any hope of turning the state around after the last election, we need to work TOGETHER.Debbihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17727115174070254910noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1656624371497588038.post-53963731226380267322015-03-17T01:36:14.203-04:002015-03-17T01:36:14.203-04:00This comment has been hidden from the blog.Sean O'Learyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01287734264328253814noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1656624371497588038.post-68335910796101307862015-03-16T21:14:45.209-04:002015-03-16T21:14:45.209-04:00This comment has been hidden from the blog.Antipodehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05132923524018605701noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1656624371497588038.post-63867051476601606172015-03-14T09:59:20.267-04:002015-03-14T09:59:20.267-04:00This comment has been hidden from the blog.Chuck Woodnoreply@blogger.com
